Pine Needle Basket

Background:
Baskets were made in many shapes and sizes as tools to hold and carry items. Pine needle baskets were made anywhere pine trees are indigenous. The pine needles I used were collected and dried from the tree in my yard. I then followed the instructions in the January 1995 Compleat Anachronist (#77 "Medieval Baskets") to start and finish the weave on a leather base. I used rafia to sew the needles together, though grasses or linen thread would have been used in period in Europe. I added the beads to fit my personal taste as the basket was to sit in my sewing room and hold small items (such as my scissors) at the ready. I doubt the beading is period, but the shape, leather bottom and the technique used is.
