This is called huck embroidery, huck weaving or Swedish weaving and is a needlework that uses a running stitch to mimic weaving. It is a traditional Nordic technique with roots in Swedish linens dating back to the 1600s.
It is traditionally done on huck toweling buck can also be done on other even-weave fabrics like monk's cloth. The technique created geometric and linear designs on the fabric with the stitching primarily appearing on the front side.
