Egyptian Faience

This is a continuation of our Egyptian Faience Beads.  Gæira Aggadóttir, Rose Keeler, Lisa Sciortino and David Helmer branched out and decided to make our own “mix”.
Tools: tooth picks or mandrels, Styrofoam to place toothpicks in, paper towels, kiln
Materials:  clay mixture, water
When we got together on September 9, 2018, to finish our beads, David Helmers did some research, located a number of different recipes, and found all the ingredients online at http://theceramicshop.com/.  He purchased the needed ingredients to make about 3 pounds of material and 2 colors for $22.  He added an expensive cobalt color afterwards, just because.

The recipe mixed by Gaeira for our next few sets of beads:
38% Soda Feldspar
38% Silica
12% Ball Clay (the only non-white ingredient)
6% Soda Ash
6% Sodium Bicarbonate

For bead colors we used:
Plain / White = Nothing added to the ingredients
Turquoise = Copper Carbonate
Medium Blue – Copper Carbonate + Colbalt Oxide
Green = Copper Carbonate + Chromium Oxide
Green/Blue experiment = Cobalt Oxide + Chromium Oxide

Several of the beads we did from the Pennsic Instructor’s mix stuck to the wooden sticks we used to make the holes and dry them and they broke during removal.  For this batch, we made the holes larger and removed them from the sticks to dry instead of letting the beads dry on them.

On Saturday 9/15/18, we mixed and used the following two batches first:

On the right: Medium Turquoise - added 2-3% Copper Carbonate
On the Left: Medium Green – added 3% Copper Carbonate and 3% Chromium Oxide
