Needlelace Class

Needlelace is a form of embroidery that uses a method of passing a thread through loops with a tapestry needle.  The various looping techniques are used to create a lace -like textile that is similar to a crochet cloth.  Various textures and patterns can be achieved with these methods in many different shapes and sizes.  Needlelace is just one aspect that appears in a form of embroidery named Stumpwork, or Raised work ( a term used prior to the Victorian period).

This class was a "Taster" class for embroidery through the San Francisco School of Needlework and Design on Feb 20, 2021.  The design was done on muslin using DMC threads.  We drew the circles and squares first and then practiced the stitches  Materials provided: muslin, needles, floss in 2 thicknesses, gold passing thread and sewing thread for couching the cordonnet.

To begin any needlelace sample, a cordonnet must be created.  The cordonnet functions as the foundation to work the needlelace.  There are several different types of cordonnets.  This workshop focused on creating slips that can be removed from the ground cloth they are worked on and later applied elsewhere.  After a cordonnet is stitched down, the needlelace itself can begin.

I have not removed and applied my needlelace to a final piece of fabric.  The ground cloth will appear messy because I have parked my threads everywhere on this incomplete practice piece.

Single Brussels - my spacing suffered as I attempted speed.
Do smaller stitches for a denser look and larger for an "airy" look

Single Brussels worked vertically in rows.
This stitch can also be worked in a "round" (circle).

Bottom - Brussels stitch with return

Variation of Brussels with return being accomplished by laying a gold thread

Trellis stitch - it is worked so the knots are on top

Spiral Trellis - worked in the round with the knots on top
