Traditional Embroidery Flower

This was a "Taster" class for embroidery through the San Francisco School of Needlework and Design.  The design was done on silk with a muslin backing using cotton, wool and silk threads.  We first practiced the stitches on a separate piece of muslin and then started the piece.  The stitches are: coral knot, long and short, Pistil, raised stem band, seeding, stem stitch, wheat ear and woven picot.

I was a little taken aback that the long and short stitches were taught differently.  It actually made more sense not to outline the entire thing.  I also wasn't left wondering about the color changes (when and how to recreate a look) as I was with the May Morris Pincushion.

Paneled for Athena's Thimble at John Barleycorn on 9/3/2022 and recieved Competence in Freeform and Working Knowledge in Padded work - a surprise to me!

Learning the stitches.  While it is great to learn the stitches, if the pattern has curves, I kind of wish they'd go over that too.

Finally started the piece.

Long and short i still not my friend.  Blending is not easy.

Coral knots

Starting the raised stem band.  That wheat ear stitch was much easier in cotton than the silk provided.

Finishing the raised stem band

Finished the outline and time for the leaves

Finished front

Finished back
