So I did some research on garters in the 15th century and started knitting up a pair. They are generally all tie on and I was having a heck of a time matching the 1-ply to meet their gauge. So the recipient finally gets back to me and he wants ones that buckle.
Stop the presses. That's not period to your persona. Doesn't care. So off we go to do something different. His wife is my protégé', so I card wove his garters in the same pattern as her belt and added buckles purchased on Etsy from 4UrbanViking. I would've added belt tips for weight, but it is an impossible size to match.
The pattern is available on pages 60-61 of “Card Weaving” by Candace Crockett. I used S/2 Bamboo by Brassard Color 5070 Royal from Yarn Barn of Kansas and 10 cards to fit the width of the buckles. The bamboo thread likes to stick to itself as it twists in case yo decide to try bamboo thread in the future.
